In the heart of the esteemed Santa Maria Estate in Malta, I had the incredible opportunity to spearhead an art project that breathed new life into the most opulent villa in the region. This endeavour involved replacing a one-million-euro art collection with my own contemporary fine art street photography, a collection that draws inspiration from the atmospheric cyberpunk films of the 80s, particularly the iconic Blade Runner. My distinctive style, which I term "neon noir," captures the essence of urban landscapes in a way that transcends time and space.
The core of my work lies in the exploration of various locales, from the raw and gritty Leake Street Tunnel in London to the vibrant streets of Soho, the ancient allure of Kathmandu featuring the revered Pashupatinath Temple, and the modern marvels of Dubai. Each photograph serves as a visual narrative, telling stories of the places I've visited and encapsulating the unique blend of tradition and technology that defines these diverse locations.
For the Santa Maria Estate villa project, I carefully selected 13 photographs that resonated with the new tenant's desire for a contemporary aesthetic. These chosen images, printed on museum-quality aluminium, boast impressive dimensions of 180cm by 240cm, dominating the interior spaces with their arresting presence. The decision to employ large-scale prints adds a sense of grandeur and importance to my artwork, effectively transforming the villa into a gallery-like space.
The photographs chosen not only pay homage to my signature neon noir style but also evoke a sense of nostalgia for the cyberpunk aesthetic that defined an era. As viewers explore the images, they are taken on a journey from the bustling streets of London to the sacred temples of Nepal and the futuristic landscapes of Dubai. This art project revitalizes the villa's aesthetic, infusing it with a fresh, dynamic energy that seamlessly blends the old with the new.
